Prefinished aluminum arrives ready to use, and that’s the whole point: no painting or finishing on site. But the finish is only as good as the care it gets between delivery and installation. A few simple habits keep sheets and coils looking the way they did when they left the mill.
Store it dry
Moisture is the biggest enemy of stacked aluminum. When water gets trapped between tightly stacked sheets, it can’t evaporate, and it can leave stains on the surface. Keep material indoors whenever possible. If it has to be stored outside for a short time, keep it off the ground, cover it loosely so air can circulate, and tilt it slightly so water runs off rather than pooling.
Keep it off the ground
Store bundles on pallets or dunnage, not directly on concrete or soil. That protects the bottom sheets from ground moisture and makes handling easier.
Handle with care
- Lift sheets rather than sliding them across each other, which can scratch the finish.
- Wear clean gloves to keep oils and dirt off the surface.
- Carry large sheets on edge or with enough hands to avoid bending or creasing.
- Use clean, padded supports when moving material with equipment.

Protective film: don’t leave it on too long
Many prefinished products ship with a protective film. It’s there to guard the surface during handling and fabrication. Leaving it on for long periods, especially in direct sun and heat, can make it harder to remove cleanly. Follow the film’s guidelines and plan to remove it within a reasonable time after installation.
Fabricate with the finish in mind
